Waste Strategy delay

A delay in the publication of the Governments revised Waste Strategy has been confirmed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Originally expected to be out by the end of the year, a Defra spokeswoman confirmed the document would now be out early in 2007, but would not give a specific date.

The three-month consultation carried out earlier this year had received over 4,000 submissions. Defra had said that these showed strong support for variable charging from local authorities, but a more mixed response from waste management companies.

Higher landfill tax was also given support as were more ambitious national targets, with the possibility of making these materials-based rather than weight-based.
