Waste trading service boasts 53 million tonnes of capacity

An online waste trading service has posted more than 53 million tonnes of annual permitted waste capacity for users during its first four months of operation.

Waste-a-base, a free tool that allows waste producers and receivers to trade waste arisings directly, has signed up 150 unique receivers since it launched in September, including large waste management companies such as Biffa Waste Services, Cory Environmental and Oran Environmental Solutions.

Collectively, the receivers represent 53 million tonnes of annual permitted waste capacity across 250 registered receiving sites, and more than 10 million tonnes of landfill tax-exempt capacity land, which is thought to accommodate 50% of all construction waste annually.

Biffa commercial manager Julian Holloway said: “In an increasingly competitive market, we appreciate the opportunity to capitalise on not just our cost-effective waste management options, but also to promote our emphasis on sustainable solutions including anaerobic digestion and bio-remediation.”
