Wastepack achieves 2004 compliance

The Wastelink Group has announced that its Wastepack compliance scheme achieved its packaging waste recycling and recovery obligations for 2004.

Wastepack ensures that it members, producers of packaging waste, recycle a percentage of waste material in accordance with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive.

Wastelink director of compliance Peter Gaffney said: "We are pleased to have achieved compliance in a difficult year for the industry. The sudden large increase in the material specific targets, combined with the increase in the overall target, was always likely to cause problems in the 2004 compliance market."

The increase in material specific targets led to some confusion and restricted movements of Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) in the market.

Gaffney added: "Existing contracts had tied up large quantities of PRNs that could have previously been used to meet general recycling obligations, but were then required to meet the material specific obligations. We overcame these challenges and look forward to continuing to deliver for our members in 2005."
