Watch your wasteline this Christmas

A 14-year-old Climate Change Champion is highlighting the opportunity to recycle at Christmas with a watch your wasteline campaign.

Chosen to be a Climate Change Champion by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Ziana Kotadia from Birmingham said that thousands of tonnes of paper, plastic and glass will be needlessly discarded over the next few weeks.

Kotadia said: "Christmas may be one of the most fun periods of the year, but it is also one of the most wasteful. While it is great to receive a wrapped parcel, once you discover what's inside, the paper goes straight into the bin. People should be looking to recycle it instead.

The same also applies to bottles and cans. The more you think about what we use over Christmas, the more you realise what can be recycled. By getting into the habit now, New Year's resolutions about doing your bit for the environment could be started early."

Kotadia was one of nine young people who became a regional champion earlier this year. She is spending her year 'in office' helping educate fellow youngsters in green ways, teaching them recycling techniques and helping them reduce their carbon footprints.
