Kit: Variolock Quick Coupler System

What is your product?

Worsley Plant’s new partnership with Lehnhoff makes it the exclusive UK distributor of the Variolock Quick Coupler System, which is ideal for hydraulic excavators from 2-130 tonnes.

How does it work?

Variolock turns a hydraulic excavator into an all-round specialist, allowing easy and frequent changes of tools.  Each attachment is ready for safe use in a matter of seconds.

Changing any attachment is effortless, safe and fast.  The operator can change any tool including the hydraulic connection at the touch of a button from the comfort of his cab.

Where would it ideally be used?

Ideally the Variolock system would be used on a construction, waste management or demolition site where excavator operators can change between various attachments within seconds while staying in the cab, which increases productivity but also improves their safety.

How is it different?

There are some unique features: the Variolock quick coupler has two valve blocks with up to five short stroke valves for all functions including the oil leakage pipe, even in the mini excavator class. The new Lehnhoff short stroke valves provide maximum oil flow and minimal pressure lost which results in higher efficiency and lower fuel consumption. The short stroke valve also forms a plane surface with the surface of the block and is easy to clean and maintain.

What benefits does it offer?

The fully automatic changing of attachments with Variolock gives the user a variety of benefits: increased efficiency by saving time and manpower; more efficient working – tool changes are viable even for short working cycles; cutting costs by treating machinery, attachments and hydraulic hoses with care; more safety and comfort for the operator; less contamination of the hydraulic system, environmentally friendly.

Where has it been used?

New to the UK, the Variolock VL400 system has been successfully used by German demolition contractor Gerhard Jodeit, where it used on two excavators.  It has allowed for a quick change from hydraulic hammer to pulverizer, sorting grab or backhoe bucket. Tools are changed on average 12 to 25 times a day, and at peak times up to 40 times a day.

Any savings?

Proven savings have included a 25% improvement in performance on site.  On some construction sites you save on buying in more excavators because the Variolock introduces new methods of operating. It means one excavator can do several jobs.

What is its life span?

Some Variolocks have racked up 2,000 hours without a single incident of malfunction.

How many have you sold and where?

The product is new to the UK but has seen strong demand from construction and demolition companies from around the world.  Over 120,000 have been sold by Lehnhoff into Northern Europe where it is a market leader.

What about maintenance?

Full hydraulic systems should be cleaned at least once a day to ensure best function. In case of leakage O-rings can be changed within two minutes. Even a valve plug can be changed by the operator within a few minutes.
