Asbestos removed safely from steel products

Waste management company Renewi and start-up business Purified Metal Company (PMC) have developed a circular solution for the recycling of asbestos-contaminated steel.

Under the deal, Renewi will collect and transport contaminated metal directly to PMC’s new recycling facility in the Netherlands.

It will combine new processes with existing techniques originating from other industries – the first time this combination has been used.

During the process, the fibrous parts of asbestos will be destroyed, ensuring that it is no longer hazardous. Meanwhile, other hazardous substances contaminating the steel, such as chromium-6 and mercury, are captured or neutralised.
