Automatic transmission is key to collections

Two companies appointed to help tackle the infamous waste problem blighting Lebanon have specified refuse collection vehicles equipped with Allison transmissions because of the advantages of fully automatics in such an application.

When Ramco and City Blu won new government contracts to help clean up the streets, each invested in Mercedes-Benz Atego trucks fitted with Allison’s 3000 Series transmissions.

The series is designed for med­ium-duty commercial vehicles, and is available with close- or wide-ratio gearing and up to seven speeds. Engine-driven power take-off is available as an option, as is an integral output retarder which provides enhanced vehicle braking and reduces brake wear.

City Blu collects refuse from the Baabda district in the mountain city of Aley and from the Chouf region south of Beirut, which features forested mountains and a narrow coastal strip. The company is using 15 Atego 1729s for steep ascents to altitudes greater than 1,000m.

This needs a responsive engine and transmission, and village streets not much wider than a truck demand precise speed control and manoeuvrability. Drivers appreciate the fact that the fully automatic transmission allows them to keep both hands on the steering wheel and there is no gearshifts to distract.

Ramco collects waste from Beirut and its suburbs using 80 Atego and Actros trucks, an increasing proportion of which include Allisons.

Ramco workshop manager Ayman Hilal said: “Drivers are interchangeable between trucks of different brands, and most report better performance and responsiveness with the Allison transmission compared with AMTs or manuals in the same truck model.”
