Enhanced metal recovery from mixed recycling

Increased demand for efficient recycling has resulted in Re-Gen Waste, based in Newry, Northern Ireland, processing more than 140,000 tonnes a year of mixed dry recycling (MDR) in a 24-7 operation.

As part of its expansion, Re-Gen required maximum metal recovery from upgraded MDR and paper waste streams.

Eriez Europe was tasked with selecting suitable magnetic separators. Two identical 2,000 mm-wide ST22-80 eddy current separators (ECS) were supplied and installed on the MDR and paper lines, in addition to the existing ST22-80 ECS on the mixed solid waste processing line installed in 2015.

The two ECS units include Eriez OBM vibratory feeders to maximise material spread across the full width of the unit, allowing optimal separation performance. On both waste streams the ECSs are removing valuable aluminium at throughputs of up to 30 tonnes an hour.

A CP20/120 overband magnet recovers profitable ferrous metal, as well as providing protection for the ECS units downstream.

The high levels of metal separ­ation have contributed to Re-Gen reducing overall contamination, providing higher quality waste material and increasing aluminium recovery by 2%.
