Waste-A-Way uses one model of truck to stand up to its intensive ‘muck and bullets’ operation: Mercedes-Benz Arocs.
The Basildon company runs a haulage fleet of 38 tractor units, all but three by Mercedes-Benz, which pull walking floor trailers. The latest of these are 14 double-drive Arocs 2648 models, which have just been delivered by Dealer Sparshatts Truck & Van.
They have flat-floored BigSpace cabs and second-generation 12.8-litre straight-six engines producing 350kW (476hp).
Purpose-designed for construction and similar applications, the Arocs offers high ground clearance on rough terrain and excels in tough working conditions. Because of the frequency with which they venture on to rough landfill sites, Waste-A-Way’s vehicles are built to N3G (off-road) specification.
The company had been running 450hp versions but is now favouring the 480hp engine because the extra power is resulting in slightly better fuel efficiency, not least because the tractor units power the hydraulics for tipping.
