Loss on ignition tester gets accredited

ESG, the provider of testing, inspection and compliance services, has been awarded UKAS accreditation for its work carrying out loss on ignition testing on waste.

ESG operates a network of UKAS-accredited laboratories, helping clients to determine accurately how much naturally occurring material is present within their waste.

The process is carried out to ensure that any material being disposed of is done so in the most appropriate manner. The procedure is important for waste management organisations because, under HMRC regulations, they must prove they are classifying materials correctly and paying the appropriate amount of landfill tax.

Testing is carried out by subjecting fines to extremely high temperatures. During this process, all organic matter is burned off and the reduction of mass is calculated, indicating how much has been lost on ignition.
