RFID tag shuts off vehicle ignition

kier vt ident system

Services group Kier Environmental has chosen VT Ident to protect vehicles from theft, using it on all new municipal vehicle purchases and across its Bridgend fleet.

The worst case scenario for the company is unauthorised use of a vehicle, which could lead to hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage, replacement vehicles and insurance claims.

Darren Judd, head of fleet and plant for Kier, approached Vision Techniques for technology that isolated the ability to drive the vehicle without authorised access, while keeping the rear machinery operational, even when the cab was unattended, and remaining safe on public roads.

Ident uses passive radio frequency ID and sensors which recognise seat pressure and door position. Users have to present a tag to a reader to allow access.

Once they are off the seat for three seconds, the pressure sensor recognises the driver has left and Ident locks down the vehicle. Even if the driver leaves the tag in the vehicle, it would be immobilised.

It means that Ident will prevent anyone without the RFID tag attempting to start the ignition or release the handbrake.
