Untha XR Mobil-e 2000

What is your product?

The XR Mobil-e from Untha, a robust, flexible, electrically driven waste shredder for alternative fuel producers. This machine has all the benefits of the company’s static XR shredder but, due to an on-board auxiliary power pack, it can be moved to different indoor and outdoor locations around a site and plugged back in.

How does it work?

With an extensive range of interchangeable screens and cutters, the shredder can be configured according to the customer’s output specification. For example, a consistent 30mm or 400mm particle size are both achievable, as is anything in between.

This means the XR Mobil-e can shred bulky, municipal solid waste (MSW), commercial & industrial (C&I), construction & demolition or wood waste with ease, to produce a homogenous alternative fuel for the energy-from-waste, cement, gasification or biomass markets.

The shredder is supplied on tracks for ease of relocation. It also has an adjustable exit conveyor with ferrous magnet for valuable metal extraction, to provide clients with a complete shredding solution.

Where would it ideally be used?

It is ideal for forward-thinking waste management companies that want to start producing alternative fuels from the valuable resources they process, as well as existing alternative fuel producers who want to increase their throughputs, reduce operating costs and achieve plant flexibility by investing in just one, moveable capital asset.

How is it different?

The XR Mobil-e is the first machine of its kind to shred with a low-power electric drive which makes it incredibly energy efficient. This along with its quiet operation (<80dB[A]), means it has minimal impact on the environment, which will aid planning applications.

Extended operating hours are also achievable and employee wellbeing is better protected.

What benefits does it offer?

In addition to low noise and flexibility, the machine creates low levels of fines and minimal levels of dust and combustible material during the shredding process.

This, combined with the slowspeed shredding concept and electromechanic rather than diesel-hydraulic drive, considerably reduces the fire risk and hence insurance premiums.

Furthermore, a foreign object protection mechanism safeguards the machine and its cutters from damage that could otherwise be caused by unshreddable items. Removal of such objects in less than five minutes ensures the performance and availability of the machine are unaffected.

Where has it been used?

Although this is a new piece of equipment, the static version of the XR has been sold to alternative fuel producers worldwide.


During a five year period, the savings are equivalent to the cost of a further three machines.

Any savings?

The shredder has been specifically designed and tested to address the operational challenges faced by waste businesses. Benefits such as quick foreign object removal, complete machine reconfiguration in as little as two hours, longer operating hours and reduced insurance premiums all equate to increased machine performance and a lower operating cost per tonne.

What about maintenance?

Design simplicity results in the shredder being easy to maintain. Its ergonomic height ensures that operators can perform servicing and maintenance quickly, safely and while in an upright position.

No pulleys or drive belts and less strain keep maintenance needs to a minimum. If an issue is ever encountered, a touchscreen control panel with remote diagnostics from Untha’s Austrian headquarters streamlines any necessary works.

Any future applications?

The static XR has proven valuable when processing a multitude of complex materials, even down to the notoriously difficult footwear production waste stream. This shredder is well-positioned to follow suit with other complex bulky, untreated or hazardous applications, in addition to the more common MSW and C&I wastes.
