Award for self-calibrating metal detector

metal detector

ConveyorTek has designed and manufactured a high-performance conveyor metal detector that can self-calibrate and work with steel cable conveyor belts.

How does it work?

The detector uses a pulse induction technology which is generated by creating a pulsing magnetic field with a series of sealed sense coils and excitation coils. Its main use is to protect plant machinery by detecting unwanted metals from travelling along a conveyor belt.

Where would it ideally be used?

The metal detector is mainly for use in materials processing applications. It can also be used in conjunction with other metal separation technologies to clean material so that an uncontaminated end-product is produced.

How is it different?

It has been many years since a new conveyor metal detector has appeared on the UK market that has been truly innovative in its electrical technology, programming and housing materials.

This detector can self-calibrate and, uniquely, can ignore steel cable belts and rip detection systems, while still detecting rogue metal pieces.

The assembly of the robust housing means it can be installed in less than 40 minutes.

The system comprises adjustable sensitivity; engineering and performance diagnostics; a series of extra alarm options and notifications; and is arguably the most robust metal detector in the bulk handling market.

The electrical controls have an integrated HMI screen for ease of use. Its key points include detection of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and self-calibrating software.

It is available in widths from 600-2,000mm, and it is single-phase 110-240V.

What benefits does it offer?

As well as being extremely robust and virtually maintenance-free, customers will see reduced downtime and lower maintenance costs due to the equipment’s core function of protecting machinery.

Where has it been used?

The metal detector was launched only recently, following two years of development. The company recently secured an order for a 2,000mm-wide system at a ‘super quarry’, which is due to be installed in the coming weeks.

Cost?

Pricing will depend on individual application and specification.

Any savings?

Customers will see significant savings on their plant maintenance bills and will benefit from reduced equipment downtime.

What about maintenance?

This self-calibrating detector is virtually maintenance-free because circuit boards and other important equipment are fully enclosed. The control panel is manufactured to IP65 standard and built to be water- and dustproof.

Any future applications?

The metal detector is part of ConveyorTek’s increasing focus on metal separation products that have been introduced to complement its conveyor system products.

The business manufactures a wide range of magnet metal separation and detection equipment for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Its core product range has been developed to work in a wide range of industries, including recycling.

How many have you sold and where?

The high level of detection capabilities ensure that the product is suitable for a range of industries – basically any materials processing application.

The sales order book is very healthy in to 2018, and, because the equipment can be flat-packed from manufacturing facilities in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, it can be shipped anywhere.

ConveyorTek currently exports 80% of its products manufactured to 15 countries, most recently signing a dealership agreement for the Australian market.

Anything else?

The metal detector has already received industry recognition by winning the 2017 Materials Handling Engineers Association Innovation Excellence Award, and has been shortlisted for the Innovation Award at the Plant & Civil Engineer Awards.
