100 firefighters called to paper recycling blaze

Barking fire

Some 100 firefighters have tackled a fire at a paper recycling plant in River Road, Barking, east London.

Its severity meant the blaze needed 15 fire engines from seven stations and took eight hours to bring under control, with a safety cordon needed because gas cylinders were present.

London Fire Brigade said the cause of the fire at the single-storey factory was under investigation.

Barking & Dagenham Council said road closures caused by the fire had led to traffic delays, but Public Health England had given the all-clear over air pollution concerns. River Road is an isolated industrial area which houses numerous recycling businesses. The one affected by fire had not been named by the fire brigade or local media.
