AD overtakes landfill energy production

The UK’s 540 anaerobic digestion plants now generate more energy than landfill gas – and represent 2% of national gas production, the industry association has claimed.

The shift is reported in the latest analysis by the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA), which notes that more than 100 plants have come on-stream this year.

ADBA says that 86 biomethane plants have applied for support under the Renewable Heat Incentive and the biomethane sector generates 2.6TWh of energy.

But the association says biomethane could deliver as much as 80TWh with the right support, sufficient for 30% of household gas demand.
