Refuse collections have ceased on 5 December in Ealing, west London, after a refuse worker with contractor Amey died in a collision with a lorry.
Mik Sabiers, cabinet member for environment and highways at Ealing Council, said: “There has been a serious incident which has resulted in the death of one of Amey’s employees.
“The council extends its deepest sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues.”
Crews have been sent home and collections are expected to resume on Saturday.
James Haluch, managing director of Amey Highways, said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm that one of our employees has died this morning.
”We are unable to provide further details about this incident at present. However, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their family, friends and colleagues affected.
”We are working with the police to establish how this tragic event has taken place.”
In July, Ealing decided to end its contract with Amey when it expires in 2020 and set up a local authority-owned company to provide the service instead. It said this would give the council greater control over services, with more flexibility to respond to residents’ concerns.
