Biffa has bought Midlands-based Weir Waste Services for £16.2m and spent £3.9m to buy three smaller businesses.

Weir in 2016-17 had revenues of £16.1m, an operating profit of £1.1m and gross assets worth £14.5m.

Biffa said Weir was “highly complementary” to its existing business, serving 1,600 commercial customers with 120 staff, 45 vehicles and a seven-acre recycling and waste treatment site in Birmingham. It will be incorporated into Biffa’s industrial and commercial division.

The round of acquisitions by Biffa has also seen the company spend £3.9m to buy three other businesses expected to add annual revenue of £4.9m.

These are H&A Recycling in Cornwall, Scotland’s Bisset Waste Management and the Vecta Group based in east London.

Biffa chief executive designate Michael Topham said: “The acquisitions we have announced today demonstrate our ongoing ability to identify and execute value accretive acquisitions across the UK.

“The Weir Waste business significantly strengthens our presence and customer offer in Birmingham and the Midlands, while the other acquisitions further enhance our platform in their respective markets. We welcome the staff and customers of these businesses to Biffa.”
