Guardians of Grub are to fan out across the catering and hospitality industries to try to reduce the £3bn-worth of food wasted each year.
The campaign is backed by WRAP and targets 100,000 tonnes of discarded food, some 75% of which it said could be eaten.
WRAP has created a website with advice on how to avoid food waste as part of a campaign launched by environment secretary Michael Gove to encourage people in the food industry to act as ’guardians’ against waste.
It seeks to encourage people who work everywhere from Michelin star restaurants to local pubs to make simple, low-cost changes to the way food is bought, prepared and served.
There will be a month of action in September called Stand up for Food, supported by the British Beer and Pub Association, the Federation of Wholesale Distributors, the Sustainable Restaurant Association and UK Hospitality.
WRAP chief executive Marcus Gover said: “We will not tackle the impact of global warming if we don’t fix the food system, and everyone needs to play their part.
“If everyone in the hospitality and food service industry put as much passion into reducing waste as they do into creating delicious food, it would make a massive difference to cutting the damage food waste is doing to our planet.”
