CIWM appoints Sarah Poulter to top job

Sarah Poulter has been appointed sole chief executive of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) after the board decided the current joint executive director set-up was “not efficient”.

The move will see joint executive director Chris Murphy leave the organisation.

Murphy and Poulter (pictured) shared the leadership role after Colin Church stepped down as chief executive in September.

The shared leadership role was initially put in place to allow the board time to look for a suitable replacement while restructuring the organisation, including some job losses.

The CIWM has been struggling to get its finances on an even keel. In 2017 it ran a deficit of £223,000 but is projected to break even this year.

Under the shared arrangement, Poulter was responsible for member engagement and Murphy for member services.

In February, Poulter told MRW the joint role was expected to last until the end of the year, but the board has now intervened. The role of deputy chief executive is to be scrapped.

Professor Margaret Bates, chair of the CIWM Executive Committee, said Murphy’s departure was announced “with reluctance”.

She added: “The CIWM is going through a period of change and restructure and, despite the best efforts of those involved, it is with regret that trustees have decided that the joint executive director arrangement was not an efficient way of working.

“We thank him for his long years of service to the institution and the sector, and we hope that there will be other opportunities for Chris and the CIWM to work together in the future. We wish him luck in his endeavours.”

Sarah Poulter biography

Poulter has worked for CIWM for 18 years, with 14 years as managing director of the Institution’s commercial and market development activities. In 2017, she took on a broader role across the organisation as head of membership and funding, before being promoted in autumn 2018 to joint executive director. Her previous background was in training and development in the construction sector.
