Colin Church to leave the CIWM

Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) chief executive Colin Church will step down from his role at the end of September.

The CIWM said he is to move to a new chief executive position but it has not yet been revealed where.

Sarah Poulter, CIWM group director of membership and funding, will become interim chief executive from 1 October while the organisation implements a plan “to design a refreshed structure”.

Margaret Bates, chair of the CIWM executive committee, said: “The CIWM would like to thank Colin for so ably steering it through a period of change and refocus, as a result of which the institution is in the process of modernising its structure to be more dynamic and responsive, refreshing and improving its membership offer, and prioritising its work to reflect the needs of today’s resource and waste sector.

“We wish Colin well in his new role, and we look forward to continuing the work he has initiated to ensure that the CIWM is fit for the future.”

Church was in the civil service for more than 20 years and became senior civil servant for waste at Defra in 2012. He became chief executive of the CIWM in 2016.
