New landfill tax rates set

2000 landfill vehicle

Landfill tax in England and Northern Ireland will be set at £91.35 per tonne from April 2019 for the standard rate, HM Revenue & Customs has said in the wake of the Budget statement from chancellor Philip Hammond.

The lower rate, applied to less polluting materials, will be £2.90 per tonne.

In both cases the increases are in line with the retail price index rounded to the nearest 5p in line with a policy set last year.

Sites operating without the necessary environmental disposal permit or licence will be liable for the standard rate for all materials.

The current rates are £88.95 standard and £2.80 for the lower category.

From April 2020 the standard rate will be £94.15 and the lower rate £3.

In Wales the landfill disposal tax will be set at the same rate as England and Northern Ireland, but the Wales-only ‘unauthorised’ rate, charged for disposals outside authorised landfill sites, will be £137 per tonne.

Scotland sets its landfill tax at the time of the country’s devolved Budget but at present it is the same as in England.
