The Environment Agency (EA) is in talks with Polish authorities about taking back around 1,000 tonnes of waste that had been illegally shipped from the UK.
According to a report in the Telegraph, 45 containers that supposedly contained plastic recycling were intercepted at Port Gdynia and found to be full of boxes, tins, detergent packaging and engine oil.
The Telegraph report said material from the UK had been identified at a large waste fire in the Polish town of Zgierz in July. The EA has not been asked by Polish authorities to investigate fires.
The EA said that it had received a request from the Polish authorities and are working with them over repatriating the waste.
It added that it was unable to reveal any futher information as the investigation was ongoing.
