Recycler fined after worker cracks ribs

Glass recycler Recresco has been fined £50,000 after a worker was injured in an incident the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said could have been fatal.

Newport Magistrates’ Court heard how an employee was injured when the barrel of a roller shutter door fell on him, resulting in three cracked ribs and a damaged spleen, and causing him to miss eight weeks of work.

An investigation into the incident in April 2015 found none of the electronically operated roller shutter doors at the company’s site on Springvale Industrial Estate, Cwmbran, Wales, had been maintained adequately.

The company pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and was fined £50,000 and ordered to pay costs of £9,944.

Speaking after the case, HSE inspector Lee Schilling said: “This case highlights the importance of regular proactive maintenance and inspection of work equipment, including roller shutter doors, to ensure equipment does not deteriorate to the extent that it puts people at risk.

“In this case Recresco failed to effectively maintain their equipment and it could have easily resulted in a fatal injury.”

The company was fined £50,000 in 2015 after an agency worker lost an arm while carrying out maintenance on sorting equipment.

And in December 2014, the company was fined £180,000 after a worker at the same site was killed on his first day at work in 2010 when the forklift truck he was driving overturned.
