Safety drive targets personal responsibility

A year-long campaign called ‘This Time It’s Personal’ has been launched by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) to highlight industry safety issues.

The campaign is intended to encourage members to question their approach to health and safety as part of their daily work, whether or not their responsibilities specifically include it.

Members will be asked to improve standards by making changes, including challenging the behaviour of others, and to share successful workplace initiatives.

Renewi director Geoff Smallwood, chair of the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum’s waste fires working group, who was involved in devising the campaign, said: “Despite a lot of hard work across the sector, we still have a poor record in comparison to other industries,”

He said research by the Health and Safety Executive, supported by the CIWM, had found that one of the key factors in the occurrence of hazards was insufficient knowledge of how to plan and perform tasks safely.
