'Severe' fire at DS Smith plant

Ds smith fire

A fire at DS Smith’s paper recycling depot in Willenhall, Walsall, has broken out, with the cause under investigation.

The company said early reports suggest the fire started this morning in machinery running papers for recycling, although the actual source of ignition is unknown.

West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service sent 30 firefighters and five fire engines to tackle the “severe” blaze, advising residents to keep doors and windows closed.

The fire is now under control and the company said it is working with the fire service “to ensure a safe conclusion to the situation”.

DS Smith UK managing director Mathew Prosser said: “All operations are currently suspended and all incoming vehicle movements are being safely diverted from site, but the fire has been contained and has not spread to any buildings on or near the site.

“Health and safety is of paramount importance to DS Smith, and the company is working with the relevant authorities to help investigate the cause of the fire.”

He said all staff and visitors have been evacuated and there were no reported injuries.
