Sims makes northern purchase

Sims Metal Management (SMM) has acquired Morley Waste Traders and Lord and Midgley (Morley) businesses.

Morley has 10 metal recycling facilities across Yorkshire, which now gives SMM 50 such facilities across the country.

Alistair Field, SMM group chief executive, said: “Morley’s operations in north England fit strategically with our own current footprint, and will be a valuable addition to our Europe Metals business.

”The acquisition is consistent with our strategy of disciplined growth through complementary bolt-on acquisitions in our core markets.”

Paul Wright, managing director of Europe Metals at Sims, said: “Our acquisition of these businesses is an excellent example of how our UK growth strategy is taking shape. Morley’s large ferrous and non-ferrous processing facilities will extend our footprint into new markets, while offering local businesses competitive solutions to their metal recycling needs.”

Morley’s owners Stan, Tom and Michael Whittaker said: “Credit for today’s business lies with our parents and founders of the business, Stan Snr and Kay. They founded the company 58 years ago, providing us with the platform to successfully expand across the north of England. Without their vision and commitment, the business would not be what it is today.”
