Site sought for disputed bulk recycling plant

Powys County Council has asked community groups to suggest a site for a recycling bulking facility after disputes about its chosen location.

The council opted for a site in the Abermule Business Park, near Newtown, and last year secured planning permission for the building, where recyclates in bulk would collected for transportation to reprocessors. It said the county’s north lacked such a facility.

But the project was delayed, and the council had to vote to push the £2.7m involved into the 2019-20 financial year.

Objectors said the project should not remain committed to Abermule, and secured agreement that the money would be earmarked simply for a North Powys Bulking Facility.

A council spokesman said two sites suggested by the community group had been rejected as unsuitable, but it would still consider alternatives even though the facility might eventually be built in Abermule if no better site could be found.
