The City of London Corporation is set to become the first UK authority to run a fully electric refuse collection vehicle (RCV) fleet through its contract with Veolia.
The contract, which starts on 6 April, incorporates waste collection, street cleansing and ancillary services. The full roll-out follows trials to test the vehicles last year.
The electric RCVs will feature 360-degree cameras and audible warning reversal systems.
On-board weighing equipment will digitally record bin weights at residential properties, and street cleaners will carry handheld devices for on-the-go reporting and job completion.
Vehicles will be digitally tracked to monitor and auto-allocate cleansing tasks. As part of the contract, Veolia will supply 74 solar auto-compacting BigBelly bins, which send notifications when they are full so they can be emptied.
City Corporation chair of port health and the environmental services committee Jeremy Simons said: “This pioneering technology-driven contract aims to exceed the high standards people expect of our waste and cleansing services whether they work, visit or live in the City.
“The Square Mile is a world-leading international financial centre with more than half a million daily workers, 7,500 residents and 18.4 million visitors a year.
“They rightly expect the best and I’m delighted that Veolia has been appointed to deliver this contract.”
The full list of services covered by the new contract includes domestic waste collection; commercial waste; recycling collections; street cleansing; winter maintenance; special event preparation and clear-up; vehicle maintenance; and gully servicing.
