NRAs 2018: Manufacturer of the Year

WINNER: Eurocell

Eurocell is committed to the circular economy, operating a cradle-to-cradle multi-life closed-loop PVC-U recycling process in the UK. Its board has a clear strategic and commercial programme for increasing recycling and boosting consumption of material produced within the group.

The business is continuously developing process and technology improvements to improve yields and produce quality material suitable for upstream and downstream applications, for maximum manufacturing flexibility.

Eurocell’s recycling process has been developed entirely in-house, using its own engineering expertise and by adopting best practices from other industries, such as food manufacturing and rail engineering, with the machinery sourced from across Europe.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “This is the clear winner, it is fantastic. It was innovative and we liked the way the company looked across the whole business to keep improving.”

Eurocell developed dual material extrusion technology to enable the accurate processing of post-consumer recycled material. DMET is used in the manufacture of its main PVC-U window profile systems, equating to around 27,000 tonnes of new products each year.

All post-consumer recycled material is concentrated in the core of the profiles, so the external faces maintain the finish quality and UV stability performance demanded by the relevant quality standards and customer expectations.

The company’s reprocessing of PVC-U imbues it with additional structural strength. Post-extrusion, this results in recycled product being superior to that made from purely virgin material because the process creates better dispersion of material elements.

Its ongoing investment in process technology has included extruders and market-leading colour sorting equipment. This has seen the number of PVC-U window frames recycled at the plant increase in the past five years by 58%, and more than a million post-consumer frames were recycled in 2017 from residential and commercial sectors.

Eurocell has expanded the range of products that feature recycled material. This includes its Modus window and door profile system, which consists of around 45% post-consumer recycled material to optimise energy efficiency performance.
