The export of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) from England and Wales grew by more than 17% year-on-year in the first four months of 2014, the latest figures from the Environment Agency have revealed.
Over 800,000 tonnes of the material were shipped abroad between January and April 2014, up from around 680,000 in the same period last year.
The top ten exporters (graph above) accounted for almost 76% of the tonnage exported. Sita UK sent abroad some 120,600 tonnes, followed by Biffa with 116,400 and Andusia Recovered Fuels, 79,000.
The main recipients were operators in The Netherlands, which received 54% of all RDF export, followed by Germany, 21%, and Sweden 17% (graph below).
