NRAs 2015 Best Recycled Product: Polystyrene wood – Kedel

Lancashire-based Kedel is a family-run business that specialises in recycled plastic, in particular, ‘polystyrene wood’.

This is 100% polystyrene, made from clear crushed CD cases and is itself 100% recyclable.

It can be dyed to match any colour, does not splinter, crack, warp, attract fungus or mould, or expand due to water absorption. It is also non-toxic and carbon positive, as well as requiring no maintenance.

The polystyrene wood is created by combining crushed CD cases with colour pigments and UV stabilisers in a process developed by Kedel. This compound is then extruded through dyes and cooling plates to create a variety of shaped profiles for use in applications such as construction, education, domestic maintenance and building projects.

The product has various uses such as building cladding, as decking for walking areas, raised beds and planters, colourful benches, picnic tables and lawn edging.

“We were impressed with the vision and drive to produce a truly innovative new product from a single waste material. The potential and scope of application is very exciting.”

Judges’ comment

By using colouring pigment which can be any colour in the spectrum, it is able to match any Pantone or RAL colour from bright primary colours used for beach huts or in schools, to cool modern building colours such as country pebble grey or anthracite. The colours can be created to match existing colours or to create colours that match corporate identities.

Feedback from a householder in West Yorkshire who user response to the product: “The quality of the planter is absolutely fantastic and to think it requires no maintenance is brilliant.

“I am a childminder, and when the children use the garden in the summer no longer will I be picking splinters out of fingers. I imagine this is why these products are so attractive to schools and nurseries.

“We have always had wooden garden furniture and fencing, but after receiving the planter we will definitely be replacing all our rotten, faded wood with this high-quality plastic wood.”
