NRAs 2016 - Equipment Innovation Of The Year

Winner: Siltbuster

Siltbuster’s Gritbuster WT-250 has revolutionised the way that companies recycle. It is saving recycling businesses and local authorities large sums of money in landfill tax and ensures that more material is recycled as aggregate rather than sent to landfill.

The Gritbuster WT-250 makes it easier for MRFs to separate out the constituent elements of the waste they handle on a large scale. It is designed to handle road sweepings, gully waste and trommel fines, cleverly using water to further separate out recyclables. Capable of handling up to 25 tonnes an hour and using wellestablished wet separation processes, the plant separates feedstocks into washed gravel and sand products.

As a result it can save money and boost recycling levels. A typical recycling company using the system will gain £742,000 a year in reduced landfill tax and material reuse.

This winner effectively cleans and sorts constituent products to a high standard of purity. They enable and deliver an impressive return on investment, especially when savings on waste not being sent to landfill are taken into consideration

Judges’ view

In April 2015 trommel fines with higher organic content were subject to a large hike in landfill tax: to more than £80 per tonne rather than the £2.50 per tonne they had enjoyed in the past. This means that a typical company dealing with 10,000 tonnes a year of trommel fines could see its landfill tax bill rise by £600,000 a year.

But trommel fines typically comprise 80% material that, if separated, would qualify for the lower landfill tax rate, dramatically reducing annual landfill tax bills. Siltbuster recognised this and devised a viable way of separating this material from the other ‘non-qualifying material’ on a significant scale.

The Gritbuster WT-250 is seen as a breakthrough technology and has been bought by materials recycling specialist Doppstadt as a demonstration machine. The company will promote the system to its thousands of customers in Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy and France.
