HomeSafe was launched in May 2018 and has been rolled out across Viridor and its parent and sister companies, Pennon Group and South West Water. It was launched as an initiative to inspire real change in all employees’ safety behaviours through interactive face-to-face workshops and e-learning.
HomeSafe is not a new procedure, process or system but an operationally led mindset alignment and enhancement. Rather than being policy-driven, the company wants safety to be driven by pride in what it does and the way it does things. This puts its employees’ personal responsibility for safety at the heart of what it does and empowers them to lead on safety.
JUDGES’ COMMENT: “This programme was interactive, well-communicated and could be replicated by others. It can also positively change behaviours beyond the workplace.”
The programme has no classroom training in the traditional sense. Instead, people work together through a series of learning sessions and activities to initiate meaningful safety dialogue between participants. This leads staff to challenge their belief systems and motivates them to adopt safer behaviours.
Learning sessions for employees include: the big picture; how do we measure up?; expectations and behaviours; hazard spotting, sorting and reporting; life saving rules; behavioural safety; ready for go live; and what happens when.
HomeSafe has been deployed across Viridor through a variety of activities during the past 24 months. Modules were produced in multiple variants and translated into Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Romanian and Bulgarian.
The programme needed all employees to value their own safety and take responsibility for the safety of colleagues and the community. Initial Viridor safety statistics show that during 2018 there was a significant reduction in the number of lost time incidents (14%) and an increase in the number of near-miss reports (20%).
