NRAs 2019: Independent Operator of the Year

WINNER: Warrens Group

As a forward-thinking, third generation family business of more than 70 years standing, Warrens Group has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the north-east’s pioneers of agricultural and food waste recycling services.

Its fundamental purpose is to collect waste for energy, but its passion is to educate and strengthen local efforts to address the environmental issues caused by traditional methods of waste disposal and recovery.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “This demonstrated positive initiatives and outcomes, and showed a willingness to push boundaries with technology.”

It believes in circularity, and the business launched the region’s first HGV fuelled exclusively by the biomethane gas it produces at its anaerobic digestion (AD) facility.

From collection to conversion, Warrens Group takes full ownership of its supply chain, driving the need for a low-carbon footprint across the business.

Through acquisition and strategic alliances during an 18-month period, it sought to implement a robust compressed natural gas replacement policy for its fleet of trucks. It launched its first HGV to collect food waste powered by the gas this waste produced in 2018. Since the implementation of the fleet and installation of an on-site filling station at its bespoke AD plant, Warrens has seen a rise in blue-chip food manufacturing firms focusing their efforts on trial partnerships as part of their sustainability ambitions.

The business offers economies of scale, allowing customers to benefit from its end-to-end process. Feedback from customers shows praise for its commitment and innovation.

Warrens Group has demonstrated strong business growth year-on-year, with an increase in turnover of 13.6% in the past financial year and between 6.9% and 33.5% in previous years. It plans to increase its digestion capacity and add more gas upgrading equipment to increase production in the next 18 months.
