NRAs 2019: Partnership Excellence – Commercial

WINNER: UKWSL and Marston’s

The partnership between Marston’s and UKWSL was born out of a shared goal to bring waste innovation to the hospitality sector. With some 1,600 pubs and five breweries located nationally, Marston’s falls within the UK’s top five largest pub chains.

A continuous improvement approach led to the company achieving its 2020 environmental targets by mid-2018 and beating a two-year cost-saving target in just over a year. Landfill diversion is now 99.5%, recycling is 85.6% and energy recovery is 13.9%.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “This demonstrates a comprehensive, scalable and replicable circular solution that includes training from management level down.”

UKWSL and Marston’s have developed closed loop solutions. Pub gardens have been redesigned using Plastecowood’s material made from Marston’s plastic waste. The business has also begun redirecting its glass waste to processing facilities that reuse the material to produce its own glass bottles, to maximise the commercial and environmental value of these secondary resources.

Keeping the workforce interested in waste is challenging but fundamental to driving long-term cultural change. UKWSL delivered waste training across the chain, giving all Marston’s employees a uniform understanding of best waste practices. Head office received CIWM-accredited WasteSmart training and the account manager developed e-learning resources for all new staff.

UKWSL also introduced recycling league tables to engage with pubs and encourage friendly competition to improve performance. This has incentivised them to make self-driven changes to day-to-day operations, and have generated £13,000 in savings.

Future improvements include improving material segregation; forecasting glass bin requirements based on drinks sales; and driving more social media campaigns to encourage other companies in the sector.
