What is your product?

The R-IQR flameless vent system.

How does it work?

The R-IQR range is BS&B’s latest solution for passive relief of explosive pressure caused by dust explosions. It intercepts, quenches and retains all flame and burning materials, preventing their release into the surroundings.

It comprises an explosion panel, bursting sensor and quench module. The explosion panel interfaces with the protected process and is certified to burst at a predetermined activation pressure, opening instantly at the inception of an explosion.

The quench module absorbs and dissipates heat and pressure as burning materials and hot gas pass through it. Within a fraction of a second, an integrated bursting sensor triggers a process shutdown to limit ingress of additional fuel or spreading of hazardous material to other process areas.

The R-IQR acts as a vacuum breaker by allowing entry of cool air into the protected vessel to create equilibrium.

Where would it ideally be used?

It is aimed at dust collectors, bins and bucket elevators in industries where flammable dusts are processed. This includes paper, biofuel and other recycling plants, where there are wood-based by-products like shreddings or pellets.

If installing larger size R-IQR devices on weaker equipment, additional bracing is recommended by connecting to the eyebolts supplied with each unit. Alternatively, BS&B would recommend its chemical suppression systems.

How is it different?

The R-IQR has a venting face that allows maximum venting efficiency on a wide range of process dust types. This feature returns the maximum venting area for minimal unit weight.

The unit has an inspection door so the user can easily check the condition of the sensor and explosion vent during maintenance without having to remove the entire quench module.

What benefits does it offer?

The R-IQR is lightweight and user-friendly. It is easily installed in any convenient location by a bolted flange connection at its inlet. It allows for refit and maintenance without removal of the entire assembly.

Each unit comes with an integral burst alert sensor and monitor circuit that generates an alarm signal when the device activates. This satisfies any requirements for alarms to indicate the need to shut down the process and stop the feed of dust and air which fuel explosions.

Where has it been used?

BS&B has supplied the R-IQR to aerospace clients. It is fitted on carbon dust filter units to protect against explosion risk.


Prices depend on the bespoke needs of each client.

What about maintenance?

The R-IQR requires little routine maintenance and the sensor alerts the operator to any process activation. Factory-trained personnel are available for assistance with commissioning, maintenance shutdown and annual inspections.

Commissioning and annual inspections will identify any planned maintenance requirements unique to each application. Periodic inspection ensures optimum safety.

After system activation there is minimal external cleaning required. The R-IQR can be refurbished after activation for quick and economic process restart.

Any savings?

The R-IQR vents safely indoors and saves on adopting other expensive solutions.

What is its life span?

The system is robust, and is expected to perform for many years once installed.

How is it future-proofed?

Changes to current EN standards would be scrutinised.

Any future applications?

The R-IQR has been applied in the food, grain, bulk and solids processing industries. BS&B is now supplying it to a relatively new area: print cartridge recycling. Toner dust is highly combustible and has caused major explosions during the recycling process.

It will be further supplied as protection for shredding, grinding, roasting and pelletising processes.

Anything else?

The R-IQR comes in eight sizes ranging from 170 x 470mm to 586 x 920mm venting area. The system is tested to EN1600:2011 (specifically for flameless venting devices.) It conforms to EU legislation for protective systems, with Atex certification and the CE conformity marking.
