Recycling and Waste Management Business of the Year (Large): DS Smith Recycling

DS Smith Recycling is Europe’s largest paper recycler, collecting 5.4 million tonnes of it every year. It has a zero waste ethos and no investment in landfill as well as a passion for driving continuous improvement. Part of the DS Smith Group, it is the largest integrated paper and packaging group in the UK and second largest in Europe. It operates 20 recycling facilities and manages over 14,000 sites in the UK.

The company delivers a full recycling and resource management solution for customers across the retail, print, manufacturing and SME sectors. It diverts 250,000 tonnes of other recyclate from landfill each year - including plastics, metals, WEEE and glass by identifying and securing end markets for all materials.

To achieve this, the company has built a wide network of more than 500 reprocessors to recycle the different materials it collects, focusing on sustainable disposal options that deliver the best environmental outcomes for customers.

DS Smith Recycling aims to deliver more than just a waste and recycling collection service. It works with clients to identify how waste can be prevented and reduced by carrying out a comprehensive audit of what is generated and where. The company’s commitment to providing quality recyclate means that source separation of material is its priority.

The judges said: “This is a company that is doing its best to apply good practice and has taken a really comprehensive approach. It is a good business and is tackling waste to landfill on a large scale.”
