Q What is your product?
The SparkEx spark detection and extinguishing system by BS&B Safety Systems.
Q How does it work?
Just a few burning embers entering a dust collector, bin or silo are enough to trigger a dust explosion that could lead to fire. Spark detectors react to infra-red and visible light, picking up ignition sources. Extinguishing units generate a dense curtain of water spray across the pipework, chute or conveyor when a spark is detected. Alternative extinguishing agents can be used, such as inert gas, fast shutting gates and diversion gates.
Q Where would it ideally be used?
The product can be used in all sectors of waste management, including the biofuel industry and recycling plants, and in businesses where there is wood waste.
Q How is it different?
The SparkEx system is designed to detect the earliest stage of a potential ignition source and eliminate it using the latest infra-red technology. Active systems for explosion protection and explosion prevention can be used in tandem.
Q What are the benefits?
By investing in explosion protection, organisations can protect themselves economically, follow appropriate health and safety standards, and protect workers from potential risks. Potential ignition sources can be extinguished without production being stopped.
Q Where has it been used?
The system is used by a wide range of industries where combustible materials are handled, including the wood and furniture production industry, building suppliers and food manufacturers.
Price depends on the number of locations where the system is required. The system starts at £6,000 without installation, and can cost up to £12,000 when installed.
Q Any savings?
A fire or explosion within a plant can cost organisations millions of pounds. The system protects without stopping production. Employees are protected by safe working conditions. The system can also lead to a decrease in insurance premiums.
Q What about maintenance?
BS&B provides a range of support to users including 24hr technical support, installation service and training, specialised testing and plant audits. UK field-based engineers are available for call-out and telephone support. The system should be serviced annually, usually during a plant maintenance shutdown.
Q What is its lifespan?
If the system is kept well maintained and serviced then it will be operational for many years.
Q How is it future-proofed?
The system conforms to current EU legislation, under the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC.
As new software becomes available, it can be downloaded to the control panel during routine service visits. This allows the system to adapt to ever-changing production activities.
Q How many have you sold and where?
The SparkEx spark detection and extinguishing system is sold around the world into a wide range of industries, but the waste recycling industry is showing the largest growth in terms of industry sales and installations.
