NRAs 2017: Resource Management Business of the Year

WINNER: Timberpak

The creation of Timberpak by Egger (UK) – the largest consumer of recycled wood in the wood-panel industry – was a strategic commitment to secure its supply of recycled wood to manufacture its boards at its two UK manufacturing plants, and ensure it had complete control over the quality received.

Timberpak enables businesses, manufacturers, demolition firms, local authorities and waste management companies to reduce the amount of waste wood on which they have to pay landfill tax and help meet recycling targets.

The closed-loop cycle within the partnership sees recycled wood collected by Timberpak used to make board by Egger, and wood that cannot be recycled is used for its energy requirements. The two operations also ensure that the backhauling capabilities of vehicles are utilised for maximum efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

The approach taken by Timberpak has seen the company grow from one site in 2000 supplying 35,000 tonnes of recycled fibre to four sites in 2017 with a capacity of 375,000 tonnes.

JUDGES’ COMMENT: “Timberpak has a clear vision supported by investment in capital equipment and its workforce. It has an obvious commitment to the market, through staff development and education with customers. A great example of the circular economy in action.”

Through the appointment of a customer relations manager, the business has ensured that the correct quantity and quality of recycled wood is received. Pricing has been rationalised, with a structure based on quality and volume, and long-term contracts have been increased, which helps with the financial planning of the business.

On the strength of these long-term contracts, Timberpak significantly invests in its sites, employees, machinery and also has ongoing development plans.

Timberpak has a strategic approach to the setting of targets, objectives and commitments, driven by Egger’s need for high-quality recycled wood – a maximum of 40% of the raw material in Egger chipboard is recycled wood.

Egger has consistently grown during the past decade, increasing its recycled wood requirements. Timberpak is committed to increasing the level of wood it supplies to Egger, and this ensures customers have a guaranteed outlet for their material.

The innovative approach of Timberpak is based on its close partnership with Egger, which includes Egger’s group ethos of “creating more from wood”.
