Sita UK has secured a deal to run 17 household waste recycling centres for Devon County Council.
The waste management firm will manage the sites under a five-year contract from 1 May 2012, with the option of a four-year extension period.
The 17 centres handle a total of about 85,000 tonnes of recycling each year.
Sita already manages the county’s flagship recycling centre at Pinbrook Road in Exeter, which has the highest recycling rate in the county at 85%.
Councillor Roger Croad said: “Based on the company’s impressive track record at our centre at Pinbrook, we will be keen for the whole county to benefit from the same level of service.
“Where space allows, other centres in Devon will be able to accept more types of waste for recycling, such as carpets, mattresses and bulky plastics, so more items than ever can be recycled and diverted from landfill.”
The two recycling centres in Devon not to be operated by Sita are Maclins Quarry, South Molton, operated by South Molton Recycle; and Deepmoor, Torrington, operated by Devon Waste Management.
