Skip firm bosses ordered to pay up or face prison

The owners of a skip hire firm have been ordered to pay £190,000 or face prison after illegally dumping waste on a farm in Llanelli.

Nigel and Susan Charles from Sospan Skips had previously admitted charges relating to dumping waste on Caemawr Farm.

In December, Nigel Charles was given a suspended 26-week sentence and 200 hours of unpaid community work at a hearing at Swansea Crown Court.

Susan Charles was given a conditional discharge while another man, Bruce Charles, was given a two-year community order with 200 hours of unpaid work.

At a proceeds of crime hearing at the same court, Nigel Charles was ordered to pay £148,000 in confiscation, with a one-year prison sentence if he does not do so within three months.

Susan Charles was ordered to pay £32,000, with a six-month sentence if she fails to pay. They were also ordered to pay £10,000 in costs.

Bruce Charles had previously been ordered to pay £10,000 in costs.

The company has no assets and was given a two-year conditional discharge.

According to local reports, Nigel (known as William) is the firm’s owner, Susan is the company secretary and Bruce is Nigel’s brother.
