Two battle for South Mids waste deal

Two firms have been shortlisted for a waste management contract in the South Midlands.

Central Bedfordshire Council invited Viridor and a New Earth Solutions/Remondis consortium to submit final bids for the deal.

Both the shortlisted teams would develop facilities at a council-owned site at Thorn Turn near Dunstable to meet the requirements of the contract.

Both bids include one new and three refurbished household waste recycling centres, as well as two gritting salt storage barns.

A preferred bidder will be selected this autumn with final contract award expected to take place at the end of the year.

Councillor Budge Wells said: “For waste that cannot viably be recycled or composted, the remaining bidders have proposed modern solutions that will have a minimal impact on the local environment and deliver significant environmental benefits.

“The council remains committed to achieving its aim of recycling or composting 60% of its waste by 2020 and the proposed solutions will assist us in meeting this target.”
